The Greensand Way

With a group of friends we've started The Greensand Way. This 108 mile route is between the North Downs and The South Downs. The route follows a ridge of greensand rock through Surrey and Kent. Our aim is to walk it in about 11 stages, hence roughly 10 miles each daily walk. 57 miles are in Surrey, the remainder in Kent.

The first walk was just over 10 miles, we parked in the car park at 8am, at Tanner's Lane, Haslemere  (free on Sundays). The day's route, in nice dry weather, took us to Witley station and we came back on the train, just £2.70 each! On the way, such great sights and delights! Walking out of Haslemere was a little convoluted but the map helped us find the pleasant route. After nearly 4kms (approx. 2.5 miles) we reached the National Trust cafe at The Devil's Punchbowl. We were too early for the coffee shop, despite many of us being tempted to wait, we kept going and enjoying the superb views in this famous area to north and south. Following the route via the outskirts of Thursley, it took us along a great variety of ups and downs through fields, along tracks, lanes and paths to Witley station. Enjoying our packed lunches, we returned on the train, back to the cars by about 2.30.

The next walk will take us from Witley to Winterfold Heath near Cranleigh, we're going to see a lot more of the best Surrey and Kent can offer!
